My Students

Hello, my name Is Jessica Howe. I have been a passionate early childhood educator for 13 years. The past 2 years I have worked as a 2nd grade teacher at an outstanding school that I am proud to call my home. My colleagues have become like family, and the students are treated just like our own.

We educate and support nearly 500 students with over 85% being below poverty level.

Frequently, our students come to school without any prior schooling and often little English speaking skills. Our school recently embarked on monthly trauma informed trainings to help with the increasing need for emotional support we are seeing in our students.

Even though our students face personal struggles every day, they SHINE when they come to school! They excel academically, create music and art, learn technology skills, work collaboratively, experience off-campus learning, learn respect and teach kindness and most importantly (to me anyway) learn social skills that are necessary in being a successful adult in the future. They overcome barriers daily and do so cheerfully.

That is why this I am hoping to partner with Donors Choose to help them to be the best that they can be!

My Project

My goal with this project is to provide opportunities for inclusion in every day lessons for my students with special needs.

Each of the items requested will be used every within whole group lessons and also if a particular student needs a sensory break.

I want to educate my class about students with special needs with the read aloud book. I plan to provide flexible seating options with balance balls and lap pads to get my students who require movement out of their desks throughout the day. I plan to provide adaptive devices like weighted buddies and fidgets for my special needs students to help them feel regulated in class. The manipulatives will also provide them with fine motor practice and sensory breaks. My goal is to help my students with special needs make social and academic gains throughout the year with the items on my list!
