Help me give my students a therapeutic and sensory friendly environment where they can build coping skills and learn to self-regulate in a calm and cozy space!
Many of my students suffer from anxiety, and at times lack the ability to self regulate their emotions. This can greatly impact focus in the classroom and often leads to disruptive behaviors. Despite the resilience of children, I find my students lacking the ability to navigate social and/or emotional situations, and often as a result, they face academic challenges.
I seek to support my students' development of coping skills by providing them with a therapeutic and sensory-friendly environment.
Some of my students present with behavioral impairments, as well as learning disabilities, which can often trigger an emotional outburst. My Social-Emotional Learning room is designed to help my students feel secure and calm throughout the school day, and to facilitate the de-escalation of crisis behavior. My school’s emphasis is on addressing the SEL needs of our students, which promotes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, etc. I utilize a mindfulness approach which focuses on a student's moment to moment awareness of what they are experiencing. It helps students to focus on their breathing, and become more keenly aware of themselves and their surroundings.
Being a Title I school presents its own challenges, as many of our families are in need of these supports for their children throughout the day. Some items that will support my students include a sensory bubble wall that will create a calming environment for my students, comfortable seating and a tent where students can relax and will ensure a warm and inviting space for them to relax. These items support sensory input, and provide a safe, calming space which helps to alleviate anxiety that many students struggle with. Additionally, it will set the peaceful tone for de-escalation of disruptive behaviors.
