My students need more quality Spanish books to read in class. Due to the nature of the program (dual language), Spanish books are important for them to also increase their Spanish reading levels.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have an amazing class of bilingual students who love to read, but we have a very limited amount of quality Spanish books in our class. The majority of my students are English Language learners who are developing the love of reading. My students are able to 'check out' books from our class library to also be able to read at home. Spanish resources are not always easy to acquire, so this is more difficult for the students themselves to go out and find them.
My Project
When students have a variety of quality books at their disposal, they not only enjoy reading more, but most importantly their reading level increases naturally by being engaged in a "good book." We are a dual immersion class, so Spanish texts are a must! This is where we need the most support in. Additionally, the "check-out" system in my class also allows students to take books home so they can continue in their reading outside of school. At fifth grade in our program, they are taught 50/50. Our classroom library would be ideal to have a fairly equal amount of Spanish books. Depending on funding, I'd love to have more lit circles with Spanish titles.
