Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is loud, busy, and very engaging. It is "the place to be" if you want to learn and have a good time while doing it.
I teach five year olds with lots of energy.
They are eager to learn but most are second language learners and require lots of language support throughout the day. My school is located in a low socioeconomic inner city. It is fairly new and lacks resources that other schools may have accumulated over the years.
My Project
My students participate in literacy centers each day. Some of my centers are not as complete as I would like. My library, for instance, is in need of chairs. Currently, they sit on the floor. I want my students to be comfortable when they retreat there to read a book. I want them to grab a good book, sit on a bean bag, and go on an adventure. The animal masks will be for their reader's theater center. Currently, they read the story and act it out in front of the class without the use of any props or masks. I know they would love to wear a mask and bring their characters to life as they act it out. And who doesn't like to retell a story using flannel board puppets? My class would be jazzed up by leading their groups in a retelling session. All of these centers contribute to their literacy development and are engaging for all energetic five year olds.
If my students receive these items, I know it will make their learning more enjoyable.
Learning should be fun and I want my students to be as excited to learn as I am to teach them. I want my students to have the desire to come to school everyday regardless of any obstacles or distractions they may encounter in their personal lives.
