This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Don't you just love to be read to? Children need that to happen daily.
My students are from a high poverty area where parents don't read to them at night.
I find very few of my students get that quality time with someone at home. They come to school hungry and often dirty. Children who are coming from homes around our school sometimes don't have heat or water. We like to give them every opportunity possible to be successful.
My Project
I am requesting books with CDs to go along with them. I am trying to enhance our listening center little bits at a time. Having this center available and open to them enriches their outside knowledge as well as their reading skills. Every child should have this type of opportunity.
Part of learning to read is hearing the stories for fluency and expression.
Beginning readers need to hear the end goal. All first graders should have this gift. I try and make a nurturing environment for my students and quiet reading time is a must.
