Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach fifth grade in an impoverished neighborhood in the Bronx, NY. My school provides free breakfast and free lunch to our students as the majority of them cannot afford to pay for their own meals. I currently have twenty-eight students in my classroom who have the desire to be engaged learners. I try to make the six hours a day they spend with me, as meaningful and productive as possible.
I consistently have conversations with my students about the importance of not only education, but also of serving their community and engaging in meaningful relationships with their peers.
My experience has shown that providing them with a structured, positive and loving environment, increases their test scores and their desire to learn.
My Project
This project will help my students become more engaged readers. Children are more likely to enjoy reading a book if it is on an engaging topic and the book itself is in good condition. Currently, my classroom library is not in wonderful shape. Many of the books are old, tattered and not topics of interest to fifth graders. The books are not something a fifth grader would be excited to pick up and settle down to read.
I would love to start the year with an exciting and fresh new library, filled with current titles and books that are in brand new condition!
It is my goal to create a love for reading in my classroom by providing the best reading materials possible for my students to enjoy!
