This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What makes a child special? Their smile? The special way they have of showing you they are proud of their work while still looking "cool" in front of their friends? The way their hand slips into yours in the lunch-line because they still need reassurance? All of these things and a thousand more make my class special to me. They are a wonderful group of children that just need to know that the world is a welcoming place for people of different abilities and strengths. These kids are working so hard and are accomplishing so much.
Our class is an eclectic mix.
There are kids with special needs and there are kids who struggle with challenging life circumstances. There are doctors, and writers, scientists and artists in this class. There are gifted kids who can write a masterpiece about what they want to do in their future and others who can illustrate that masterpiece. Regardless of their abilities, all of these children have talent. All they need is a chance, and Donors Choose and You, can be that chance!
My Project
The supplies that I have requested will allow my students to feed the hunger that I have seen growing in them. Through Donors Choose, I requested and received Writing Folders and additional supplies for my students. They were thrilled that our donors believed enough in them to send them such fantastic folders. It seemed as though they asked themselves "If strangers believe this much in me shouldn't I believe in myself too?" And so our author's were born! They have been writing during free time and requesting more class time to finish up their projects. They've been writing independently and collaborating with classmates to create illustrated work. Our classroom is alive with the creative process. But we don't have all of the tools we need.
Every author should have a designated space for writing.
The requested supplies will help set up this space. Students will have supplies that they yearn for. They will know that their desire to be taken seriously as authors is being respected.
I will use the whiteboard to deliver small group instruction which will allow my lower level students to feel the same success as my higher level students. The dry erase markers will help me highlight important information and draw attention to the elements of their stories/reporting and make it the best it can be. At present, my students are creating their own books out of pages stapled together but I can only imagine how excited they will be to publish their work in an actual book.
I'm looking forward to having a publishing party for these budding authors as a result of the work we will be able to do because of these supplies.
