My Students

My students like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention! Although they all have either been identified as autistic or cognitively impaired, these labels will not prevent them from getting to work when they come into my room. From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our most challenging learners to not give up on finding their independence.

Students in my classroom are k-6 graders.

Students attending my program participate in educational programming based on a functional curriculum. In keeping with this concept, the purpose of the educational process is to facilitate the students' success in the larger community. The CEC experience provides an extensive set of age appropriate community based education experiences focusing on hands-on participation. Programming includes the development of communication skills, socialization skills, physical education, and pre-vocational education.

My Project

Making the most of the space in my classroom is important. These mobile, double-sided easels will allow all students in my room to get creative and paint on a regular basis. We all know that art can get messy. I would love to have a center set up in my room where the intent is to get messy and to get creative. I want my students to have this opportunity, as they often can communicate best in pictures. These students love the creative process and I want them to feel confident in diving into the arts on a regular basis.
