My students need these specific calculators in order to finish math test, quizzes, and assignments in my class.

My Students
My students are 9-12th graders with special needs. They are in a majority of regular education classes, but attend my special education study skills to get extra help on tests, quizzes, homework, and projects. Since there is such a difference in age within the classroom, one would think these students would not have a lot in common. However, when these kids get together in my class they become a unique blend of close friends.
Despite their different backgrounds and abilities, students in my class have one thing in common that bonds them: needing a teacher's extra assistance in this class to be academically successful.
Unfortunately, the majority of my students come from a household in poverty. They barely come with the basic school supplies they need in order to work. This can set them up for a day of academic failure from the start of each day. My students have showed a lot of progress this year thus far and continue to surprise me each day. Regardless of their background, history, and resources, these students are capable of learning and having a future. They just need someone to give them a chance.
My Project
My students' IEPs allow them extra time to finish assignments in my resource class with my scaffolding and encouragement. They are also allowed to use calculators as an accommodation. Often the students need to finish algebra I and II, geometry, and math topics homework, tests, and quizzes in my class. Despite our incredible computing skills, my students and myself lack the ability to perform high functioning math problems on the board. We need calculators.
Our school does not have the resources to provide me with a classroom set of calculators so my students are left with no choice other than to use their phones calculate math problems.
My students also do not have the means to provide calculators for themselves. This is an issue for many reasons. With all of the communication methods on smartphones students are constantly receiving messages while they are using their phones to complete homework. This is distracting and goes against our school's phone policy. The calculators on the students phones are different from the ones they use in their math classrooms. This can be challenging for students to make the connection of what they are learning in math class and practicing the skills outside of class. Finally, there are functions that the phones cannot perform that the classroom calculators can that are required of the students. This prevents the students from finishing the assignments in my class.
These calculators would be a tool used in my classroom to help the students become academically successful. If students could keep their phones in their pockets and purses and focus on completing their homework and assignments using appropriate tools, they would be much more productive and successful.
