Calculators in Need

My students need calculators that they can not only use on their high-stakes testing but are affordable enough they could purchase for their own personal life.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach math in an alternative high school. My students have major gaps in their education and as well as teaching math I am teaching my students how to use technology which can help them throughout their lives.

My students do not have much opportunity to apply technology in their lives.

I am showing them how knowledge of math can help them in life and allow them to better themselves and be more self-sufficient. Helping students believe in themselves is a large part of their achievement. Too often they find the work is “Too Hard”. Changing their mindset from fixed to growth has profound effects on their education. Once they have a growth mindset, having technology to put in their hands allows them to learn by leaps and bounds.

.

My Project

My students are leaning to better themselves when many previous teachers may have given up on them or overlooked them, allowing many of them to slip through the cracks in our system. My classroom is filling the gaps in education of low income families and helping prepare them for life.

Collaboration and metacognition reflection creates an environment where helping others helps themselves.

Finding a balance between team cooperation and goal oriented lesson plans push my students to help each other and as they grow their math skills. As my students get closer to their goals their belief that they can actually do math increases exponentially. Many of my students have very little time and experience with calculators and application. If anything they have relied on others to do the work for them. I am inspiring my students to be leaders.

These 60 TI-30 calculators will require my students to put their own skill to the test. They will not be able to rely on the efforts of others to skate them along any longer but force them to perform the computations themselves.
