This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
All of my students are in a Title I school, receive free lunch and do not have the resources that many surrounding schools in Fairfield County can afford. The students have had little resources to work with for their entire school career thus far.
My students come from many poverty-stricken areas throughout the city.
There is a very high dropout rate throughout the city and as 9th graders, this is a very important year to foster success. They are diverse learners and come to high school on varying levels. These calculators will help even the playing field between each other as well as with peers from surrounding towns.
My Project
Over 80+ students will benefit from receiving these calculators. They will be utilized on a daily basis using basic operations, graphing, utilities, scatter plots and linear regression. Not only will they be able to formulate equations, they will use those equations for predictions and analysis.
There are currently 15 calculators in my classroom that are damaged, broken, and obsolete for the 30 students present in each period.
By using these calculators, the students will be better prepared to take national and standardized tests to become college-ready, especially if they desire to be in the STEM field. As ninth graders, they need to learn the skills and appropriate technology used in a competitive world.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
