Calculators For Our Students

My students need scientific calculators to succeed in their Algebra class

My Students

The school enrollment is 1200 students. The ethnicity makeup is 27% Hispanic and 73% white. In 2017-18, 23% of students were classified as socioeconomically disadvantaged. Algebra 1 is a high school graduation requirement. 200 students are enrolled in Algebra 1A and Pre-Algebra in 2017-18. Three years of math are required to graduate.

The students in my Algebra class come with a variety of abilities.

How they feel about math varies from the "I like it" to "It is a challenging subject for me." Using the concept of a growth mindset, I am able to help them see the potential for learning math. Through hands-on activities, lots of visualization, math talks, talking about errors and their importance to learning, I am able to guide students toward the tools to be successful in math.

My Project

Students use scientific calculators in Algebra class. Calculators are checked-out to the students for the following reasons: 1)Students are financially unable to afford them, or 2) Their calculator has been stolen or damaged.

Algebra 1 students are learning to solve quadratic equations using the Quadratic Formula.

Often times the solving of these equations have decimal answers that require students to use a calculator. We spend time teaching students how to use the calculator. When we don’t have enough calculators, students have to share. The lack of hands on practice one-one-one effect the students’ ability to get the kinesthetic experience of solving quadratic equations.

As one of the Mathematical practices of the Common Core Standards for Math (CCSM), “Use appropriate tools strategically” allows for the teaching of how to use a calculator. One of our lessons is called the Water balloon toss. Students are given many quadratic equations that represent the balloon toss. They use a calculator to compute the “start” and “end” points of the balloon toss.
