My Project
Our school is one of the top schools in the East Side District in San Jose, California. We have a population of around 2000 students, a little over a third of whom are economically disadvantaged, enrolled in the district's free or reduced price lunch program. In spite of this, a lot of our students are self-motivated, enrolling or taking as many as four or five advanced placement (AP) classes yearly. One of the basic tools that we use in a lot of our science classes is a scientific calculator, and the majority of my students do not have their own scientific calculators, needing to borrow one when doing mathematical computations in chemistry.
For the upcoming school year, I wanted to provide my students with a class set of scientific calculators that they can borrow and use during class when they are doing calculations and analyzing data in our chemistry.
Over the years, I have overlooked this basic need of my students. I have assumed that most of my students would have these scientific calculators, but the past years saw more and more of my students needing to borrow one during class. In fact, this year, I had to borrow some of these calculators from other teachers in our school so that I have some that my students can use. A seemingly simple and affordable scientific tool has become a luxury for some of my students.
The Science of Chemistry involves a lot of mathematical calculations, from simple unit conversions to doing more complex stoichiometry calculations. Having a few scientific calculators readily available for my students will definitely help them during these situations.
