Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Despite the challenges they face outside of school, my students work extremely hard every single day in the classroom. They show up, they ask questions, and they help each other understand the content. They are motivated to learn and they show this through their actions each day.
Many of my students walk in, on the first day of school, with a bad attitude about math.
They have had bad experiences with it, or they automatically assume that it is going to be too hard to do. Once the school year starts, they quickly begin to realize that they can learn the material. And that's when they start putting forth more effort. I can tell that they genuinely want to learn how to complete the math problems and they want to understand the concepts, but they struggle because many of them are also far below the grade level standards that Common Core requires from them each year.
My Project
My students need these calculators to help them access a higher level of learning. Scientific calculators have functions that more simple calculators do not have (i.e pi, square root, exponents, parenthesis). As students move through middle school, the level of difficulty in their math content grows. This requires them to have a calculator that can match those abilities. Without these, my students struggle to complete the steps of the problems they are being asked to understand.
When they are unable to complete the steps of the problem, there is less of a chance that they will ever understand the whole concept.
With the content getting more advanced, as they get older, it is essential that they begin to understand the concepts while they are with me.
