This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are part of a school community that challenges students to think critically and work collaboratively with their peers. They are juniors and seniors who are eager for more challenges and thrive when they are given opportunities to solve complex problems they see in the world around them.
Our classroom is built on inquiry, collaboration, and exploration.
We are always looking for new applications and exciting projects in order to develop our problem-solving skills. Graphing calculators would allow my students to extend their reach into the world of numbers by providing them with a range of tools they can use to analyze, predict, and calculate numbers with the accuracy, precision, and pace required of real-world problem solving.
My Project
Graphing calculators benefit math students with a wide variety of learning needs and across multiple classes. They extend a student's reach into the world of numbers by providing a range of tools they can use to analyze, predict, and calculate numbers with the accuracy, precision, and pace required of real-world problem solving. They also provide a variety of ways to present numerical information, and empower them to pursue the option that best suits the way they learn. Graphing calculators are without a doubt an invaluable asset and unfortunately they come at a high cost that more than 90% of my students cannot afford. While I currently have enough calculators for each student in my smallest class to use in the classroom, I do not have enough for every student in my largest classes to use or enough to loan out to my AP Calculus students to support their learning at home.
With 20 additional graphing calculators I would be able to incorporate more data analysis and project-based learning experiences in my 11th and 12th grade courses, and give my AP Calculus students the option to check out a calculator to use, at home and over breaks, so that they can can reinforce/master the graphing calculator skills they need on 50% of the AP Calculus AB exam.
