As a second year teacher at this middle school, I realize that I have a wonderful group of students who are joyful and eager to learn despite the fact they come from low income families, lack parents' attentions, with many family responsibilities after school. 80% of students are Hispanic. Their primary language is not English which is a big disadvantage on top of everything else. Every day English is difficult enough for them, let alone using English to learn Math.
Understanding their disadvantages and their family finance struggles, I support them as much as I can.
I always have extra school supplies for them that I will give away no questions asked, all they have to do is let me know. I have been investing a lot in my students from the school supplies, prizes to reward them for working hard, and materials to make my lessons fun, hands-on, and accessible to my students. However, my 173 students need more support than I have to give.
My project is to get a 50 calculators for my class. These calculators will be used everyday. They will help my students check their answers. In this modern age of technology, we need accurate calculations. These calculators will help my students confirm their method of solving problems and eventually will do more complicated math modeling with them. Mathematicians took more than 1,555 years to find an "equal sign" which later on will solve all types of math problems. The math we know today is the constant exploring and improving of that simple tool.
Please help my students find their "equal" sign to join modern era.
