Calculating Minds: Empowering Math Students with Access to Scientific Calculators
Help me give my students access to scientific calculators during math class to explore number patterns, verify calculations, and solve multi-step problems.
Calculators are often seen as quick “answer getters,” but they are also powerful thinking tools. In my Algebra 2 classroom, scientific calculators are used to explore patterns, emphasize the importance of sequencing computations, and solve contextual problems with large numbers. Unfortunately, not all of my students are able to purchase a personal device.
Having a class set of scientific calculators guarantees that everyone has the opportunity to learn how to effectively use a calculator as a thinking tool to improve their analytical skills while learning mathematics.
During instructional time, students have opportunities to learn how and when to use the calculators compared to written calculations on paper. While practicing, all learning styles are validated as students choose which processes they prefer to use. Additionally, students become more aware that using a calculator does not guarantee success. Calculator use requires a level of mathematical understanding and accuracy when inputting values to solve complex problems. With the presence of a calculator, students can be empowered to take risks, observe patterns, and validate their answers with the click of a few buttons.
Familiarity with how to use technology as a thinking tool will transfer beyond my classroom. Your donation will foster an inclusive learning environment where students improve their confidence, critical thinking and mathematical skills. Can you help us get a class set of calculators? No amount is too small to help bring the project to life.
