Calculated Voices: Reading Math Through Diverse Lenses

Help me give my students books that allow student to learn about past mathematicians and see themselves in these texts.

My Project

This project is meant to transform the traditional math classroom by providing students with the opportunity to incorporate literacy, diverse math voices and inclusive texts. Have things books in my classroom will allow for diverse texts to be available to students that feature mathematicians from various backgrounds, time periods, and cultures. My hope is that this will allow every learner to find meaningful representation in mathematical history.

Through careful work with my English, literacy and social studies colleagues I have selected award winning or nominated texts where students can discover the human stories behind mathematical discoveries, and how mathematical thinking shapes lives and futures.

These texts illuminate how math permeates everyday experiences, making abstract concepts tangible and relevant.

By integrating these rich literacy components into the classroom, I am able to create a more equitable, inclusive learning environment where all students can envision themselves as capable mathematicians. My hope is for this approach to bridge cultural divides, addresses learning differences, and helps students develop both mathematical competency and a deeper appreciation for the subject's human dimensions.
