This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school daily with a drive to learn. My students have specific needs or disabilities ranging from visual impairment, specific learning disabilities, autism, and emotional disturbance. Most students come from a low socioeconomic background which is why I need essential materials. They are also at a disadvantage due to their disabilities. Most of the students in my class are also English learners, and some are relatively new to the country. The community consists of mostly Spanish-speaking families and a small percentage of African-American families.
I support my students in a special day mathematics classroom and they are expected to meet grade-level standards with the support and accommodations I provide.
In order to have access to the curriculum, my students need various ways to learn: visually, auditorily, kinesthetically, and/or tactically. As an educator, I want to make sure my students have the same opportunities as their peers in regular general education classrooms.
My Project
My students have special needs and most of them have huge gaps in their learning. They are expected to learn current grade level concepts in math even though they are missing many prerequisite skills to be successful.
Calculators will allow my students to focus more on the bigger ideas and connections of higher-level mathematics.
They can spend less time trying to compute simple arithmetic and more on solving multi-step problems. If my students can have access to functional calculators, this will help alleviate some of the barriers they face daily in the educational system.
