If 9 X 2 = 18 then add the numbers 1 + 8 = 9, how many 9 multiplication facts follow this same pattern? My fourth grade students have been given this problem to solve. Most students can figure out the basic 9 multiplication facts , but what about 9 x 15 or 9 x 23? When adding the sum of these do they equal 9? Students need a calculators to help them solve this problem.

I am in a new school. For the last three years, I have purchased cheap calculators that don't seem to last more than one year. Calculators are a very important in my classroom.

Students need them for problem solving, correcting their work and using them to solve multi-step problems. Students in my class will learn how important calculators are in their everyday life and that it is not a toy or a solution for them not to think.
