My Students
Imagine yourself smiling awkwardly in 8th grade as you found the discount price of a pair of shoes. In your hand, you held a scientific calculator, the gateway to becoming the brilliant thinker (and shopper) you are today. Like you, my students also need calculators for their future success!
My students are 125 eager and hardworking 6th, 7th, and 8th graders studying math and science.
They attend a diverse charter school in an urban Pennsylvania city. 50% are living at or below the poverty line, so parents cannot all afford to purchase the calculators needed to support their children's education. The students range in ability and development, and include students with special needs, students who are below grade level, and students who are gifted.
My Project
Using calculators reduces the emphasis on tedious computation, so middle school students can build confidence by focusing on problem solving, number sense, and patterns. Through your donation, you will provide my students with the tools to better understand the concepts of physics, graphs, and more.
For instance, in a lesson on discount, my student is pondering the following purchase: a pair of sneakers for $88.50 for 25% off, or a pair of sneakers for $69.99 for 5% off. When she performs the calculations using pencil-and-paper, she is frustrated by the multi-digit multiplication of decimals. When she performs the calculators on a calculator, she proudly gives the best sale price, and explains how she can use this knowledge on her next shopping trip.
Calculators help my students learn more quickly, and they can apply their knowledge in the real world, well after
they have graduated middle school. Further, your donation will help students in my classes in future years.
Your donation of calculators help students learn math and science concepts more efficiently.
The higher-order thinking skills and the confidence they develop will support them in high school, college, and beyond.
