This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the last two months of school, we were all hunkered down in our individual homes, trying to process all the changes in our lives. I was in daily contact with my 30 of my 150 students. We texted, emailed, talked on the phone, and tried to learn using Microsoft TEAMS, but it was a huge challenge. Many of my students don't have access to technology and so things are not equitable. These kids want to be back in school and return to a sense of normalcy.

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available.

I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.

Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they are given.

My Project

As a science teacher, I teach life science, earth science, physics, and chemistry to 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Having appropriate calculators would make my lessons more fluid and productive. During some of the lessons, students are required to make calculations and this often takes a lot of time to complete (we use large numbers and scientific notation).

Some of the students just lack the basic math skills, but I also don't want to spend an entire class period working out calculations.

Having a set of calculators will give me more time to teach the science concept and less time teaching how to do math calculations. If I have these 15 calculators, we will be able to use them to complete energy transfer problems, calculate calorie (heat) loss and gain, and so many other basic math problems that are found in science more quickly and accurately.
