Help me give my students concessions equipment including carts, ice machines and popcorn supplies, to engage in real-world vocational tasks and increase their life-skills.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The concession equipment in this project will allow me to create a mini-cafe experience for my middle school students with intellectual disabilities. My students will be able to develop food handling skills by filling food and snack orders. Delivering orders to classrooms on campus will allow them real life opportunities to practice positive interpersonal skills as well as practicing their mobility skills around campus.
Having authentic opportunities for social interactions is a crucial step for students to generalize skills they have learned, and for boosting their own self-confidence.
While this statement is true for all children, it is especially true for children with special needs who need repeated opportunities to practice skills before they can be mastered. These opportunities have been sorely lacking throughout the pandemic. The creation of a snack cafe, will give my students repeated opportunities to have positive interactions while becoming a more integral part of our school campus community.
