About My Students

Our school serves school students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall. Students live in many areas of the city. For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate.

This year we are creating a series of classes for "life skills" where students can choose projects & activities that include history, science, literacy and art! Grant writing helps students be clear in the descriptions of what they want, how they will be leaders & why the class needs this couch.

Students are restless, often unfocused & not working in class. When we wrote a student led grant for bean bags & soft chairs, they were very excited to discuss & write the grant. We got finished in 15 minutes!! So when I asked them if they wanted to write a grant for something else their class needed, they shouted, "A couch"!

If we get a couch for our classroom, we can take turns sitting & reading on the couch. -Raimon
