My Students

My students love using technology to learn and collaborate with others in their classroom and around the world. We are an elementary school located in Ruther Glen, Virginia with a population of 966 students. As of December 2017, our free and reduced lunch rate is 50%. Class sizes average 25-28 students per classroom teacher.

Our elementary students love being challenged by coding programs and are always asking for more opportunities to do so.

Programming apps are great for getting started with the coding process but putting it into action with tangible objects makes it real in a way students can better understand the outcome. Robotic type devices are the perfect means for making an impact.

My Project

My 5th-grade students have been introduced to programming through the code.org site that sponsored the "Hour of Code" global event took place in December 2017. They couldn't get enough. This event wet their appetite for wanting more. When one free program had been exceeded, I introduced another. They continue to make coding their activity of choice whenever they have free time in the lab.

I feel my coding project will bring programming to life for my students by putting something tangible like a robot in their hands that they can program movement, actions, and commands to by writing code.

Programming enables critical thinking and problem-solving skills both of which will better prepare them for a bright future.
