These sacks help students stay organized and the flow of my classroom is much smoother because we aren't getting up as much to retrieve materials. When I began this project, I was a first grade teacher who wanted all of my students to see characters like them in our classroom library. As the 2025-2026 school year begins, I have changed teaching positions and am now an ESL teacher. I am teaching students who are learning English as a second language. I have carried my new collection of diverse books to my new classroom. I am sure that these books will be loved by my ESL students. My new students will see characters in these books who they can relate to and they will also learn about other cultures. I believe that these books will help them to feel more welcome in our school, as well as help them learn empathy for those who may not be like them. I have included a picture of two students holding some of these new books. You will notice them standing in front of my ESL classroom door, which says \"Welcome\" in different languages to represent my diverse group of students this year. Your donation of xylophones, drums, and boom whackers have been used by students as young as 3 years old in pre-k all the way to middle school-bound fifth graders.\r\n\r\nFirst grade students would tell you of the time we read the story Mortimer- a beloved character who just wants to sing instead of going to sleep. His family goes up and down the stairs throughout the story. Students added in their own sound effects by going up and down the xylophones while reading. Anytime the instruments are out in my room the students' faces light up and I can hardly get class started before hearing \"do we get to play those today?\" Fifth graders would mention the time we played Acka Backa- a game where one student gets out each round and moves to play the music on a xylophone. Not only was the game riveting, but students also started independently reading standard musical notation as the sheet music was set up at each instrument for them to play.\r\n\r\nStudents also got to add two-handed drumming to music we had been learning. This piece really stood out as I was able to witness students from our exceptional education department thrive while playing drums. Similarly, boom whackers have offered fun and easy activities that offer inclusion for students of differing abilities.\r\n\r\nWith your donation, I have also been able to start a before school club where students play xylophones once a week. Those students have asked if we can meet everyday! Imagine what joy students experience if they are willing to get to school 45 minutes early to play music and still ask to do so more often. I have great hopes of expanding this club in the years to come and fostering a deep love for music in Caroline County.
