I feel that a child's vocabulary is an intricate part of their successes or failures in school. I have also come to realize that due to a peaked interest in technology, students are finding books less interesting than video games, cell phones, and text messaging. I think that we can reinvent a love of books and expand their vocabularies by using novels along with text on tape. I am a sixth grade English teacher who is looking for fun ways to promote reading in the middle grades. I think this could be accomplished by positively rewarding the students for reading and involving parents in the process. I would like to purchase up-to-date novels and place them in a specific area in our school's library. The students will check out the books for 2 weeks to read them. When they return the books they will complete a "sweepstakes" form. This form will contain questions about the book such as plot, setting, theme, problem, solution, author, and more. After the form is completed the parent must sign it and the student will return it to the library to be entered into a sweepstakes to be held bi-monthly. The students will be videotaped at their home receiving their grand prize. The grand prizes will be a dinner for 4 at a local restaurant. Therefore, the entire family would be rewarded for their participation in the Byram Middle School Reading Sweepstakes! The following Friday we could show the lucky student on channel one (our school television channel). Materials needed for this special project include novels for the library, colored paper for the sweepstakes forms, a camcorder, and gift certificates (or money to purchase gift certificates) from local businesses. This project would impact approximately 360 sixth grade students. I feel that this would be a great way to enhance reading, vocabulary, reading fluency, higher order thinking skills, understanding, and parental involvement. It would also lead to an increase in standardized test scores. My children are reluctant readers and this type of positive rewards is just what they need to motivate them to explore their world through books.
