This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How different would your middle school experience have been if bullying were not a factor? I am trying to make this a reality for the kids currently in my class. I would like to equip them with enough confidence to rise above bullying.
My school is a title 1 school with 100% eligibility, meaning that ALL students fall below the minimum income level.
My kids face many obstacles every day, including poverty, early pregnancy, and gang violence. These obstacles could easily distract any child from succeeding. These issues are compounded even more when other students choose to make fun of a particular student because of something that she may or may not have.
My Project
I am requesting materials that we will use in a bullying unit: a computer, printer ink, and several books that students can read and discuss about bullying. Students often times have trouble revealing to the entire class incidents they themselves have been through, but will freely discuss similar issues that we may all read about in a book. The books are truly essential to framing our bullying conversations. Additionally, I would like the students to research incidents of bullying throughout the state and their outcomes. When students realize the severe impact of their hurtful words, it can inspire them to change the behavior within themselves and not tolerate it from others.
I truly believe school is where we first learn to build and establish community with people outside of our families.
By teaching students to do this in a kind and compassionate way, we can positively impact our future.
