This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have students that have arrived enthusiastic and eager to learn. Many of my students are aware that they are struggling to grasp fundamental concepts and are begging for help. Others are completely unaware that they are not at grade level because they are at the same level as many of their peers.
These are wonderful, caring, compassionate, considerate and respectful students!
They want to help and be known in a positive light. Many overcome personal challenges to arrive at school on time every day, yet they still show up ready to learn.
My Project
Finding activities that bring real-world meaning and value to learning is vital for the struggling student to connect to the learning. My students are able to connect to the learning with these hands-on activities while gaining empathy and other skills when working on making a gift for someone other than themselves. The byproduct was an unexpected benefit as empathy is a skill that is a challenge to teach, although not mandated; a student that is empathetic is more open to learning and the challenges that it brings.
My students enjoy learning creatively with hands-on activities.
Students will be making cards with the card stock paper for a variety of occasions with their own prose as the focal point of the card. Students will also use stamps that they have designed to decorate the card stock to make for a truly one of a kind card to gift to a loved one. The inks are needed so that we can use the stamps we have made to decorate the cards. Students are eager to see the fruits of their labor come to life in their cards.
