Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 60% of our students receiving free lunch.
Regardless of their differences, "We are Us" is our unofficial school slogan.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Our students are dreamers, thinkers, talkers, and questioners. We are an AVID demonstration school and we have an International Bachelorette program that confers more IB diplomat than any other school in the county, which means we have students who will be the first in their families to attend college AND students who qualify to attend the top universities.
As diverse as our students are, they are a close-knit group who support and accept each other regardless of their differences.
My Project
Keep film ALIVE!
In teaching photography I have found that the hands-on experience of taking photographs the "old-fashioned way" is a great way for students experience how photography works.
Digital photography is great for teaching composition and basic camera techniques, but when a student is limited by the number of shots they can take, as is the case with film, they find they need to take more time to get the 'correct' photo. The process teaches patience and the importance of following directions.
When students develop their own prints they better understand the concepts of aperture and exposure, and how to problem solve when the print does not come out the way they wanted.
This valuable teaching method can be expensive and not all of my students can afford the extra cost of the materials.
