Buzzing the Blues

Help me give my students 10 Pbuzz musical instruments so they can learn to play the blues and jazz music of Chicago.

My Project

Louis Armstrong played trumpet just a few miles from our school. We have been studying the Black musical artists of Chicago's history, and our students are so amazed to learn that these things happened right here! You never know what experience might pique a child's interest, and lead them to a lifelong love of music. These pBuzz instruments make learning to play brass instruments affordable and possible for elementary school students.

Our dream is to start a band, and not just any band--one that honors Black culture and diverse voices.

With these pBuzz instruments, we can start getting to work on the band in a way that can reach every student. Our students will learn to play pBuzz in music class during the school day. In addition to the instruments, I am requesting some sanitizing spray to keep the instruments clean and sanitary.

We are a neighborhood school located in a historically underfunded, high-poverty area on the south side of Chicago. Bringing brass instruments and a band will connect students with the roots of jazz and blues music that are the heart and soul of Chicago. The pBuzz instruments will keep us engaged and learning to read music and playing together during class. They will have our students developing brass instrument skills, so that when we can finally get trumpets and trombones, our students will already have some skills and will be understanding of the concepts and excited to learn more.

I am excited to play drum and bugle, blues and New Orleans brass music with our students. They will learn about Black history and about themselves. You never know, one of our students might go on to be a professional musician and culture bearer for the next generation!
