My 6th grade students are a wonderful group. They come from all walks of life and from all over the city. When they enter my room, they know that they are loved and that they will be cared for.
Students love reading in my class, and we connect the words on the page to real life every day.
In a world that is constantly changing, learning, staying informed, and keeping up with new ideas is critical.
At the end of the day, I want every student to be excited and happy to walk through my door so that I can help them fall in love with learning.
My Project
It is one thing to read and it is another thing to do. One of our informational texts focuses on drones and the emerging industries and uses for them.
As we get ready for summer, we have been reading about how drones can help spot areas where mosquitos breed.
If you know where the baby mosquitos are coming from, then you can do something about the mosquito population.
This is a perfect project to make a real world impact, combine the information from text articles, and learn how to use new technology all in one project. Plus, with nice weather and the school year coming to an end, it is a great way to keep students engaged and interested.
The Spark is a user friendly drone and students will work in groups to accomplish each mosquito-finding mission. The yellow glasses are for the spotters, who keep eye contact with the drone, the pilot will work with the camera man to explore areas like the school roof and gutters, and a note taker will help coordinate future efforts to eliminate breeding grounds.
