This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my classroom, I work to promote a college going and pro-math culture! A high percentage of our students are first generation college goers and 100% of our students apply to college, but many of them do not start thinking about it until their junior or senior year.
My high school draws from across the entire borough, students come from all over.
There are multitudes of colleges and universities within subway access to our school and, as I tell them, there is a bus and plane from EVERYWHERE that returns home to New York for Thanksgiving- but my students only know about Columbia, NYU, and Brooklyn College.
My Project
I would like to have a button maker in my classroom in order to create buttons for the teachers that say "Ask me about Grinnell!" or "Ask me about liberal arts!" or "Ask me about studying abroad." And buttons for the students that say things like "I finished my CommonApp" or, on May 1st when they have do decide where they are going to college, they say "I am going to Ithaca College!" These buttons will then permeate the hallways and classrooms and serve as a college awareness initiative for the underclassmen.
Buttons are a simple way to spread a message.
I have a vision of a tenth grader asking a twelfth grader in their creative writing class, "What's the CommonApp?" As a math teacher, I also plan to make buttons for my classroom to give as incentive prizes when students have mastered a particularly difficult concept and are deemed experts that their peers can turn to for help!
Buttons are simple but highly effective!
