I teach at a STEM-focused elementary school. My students are creative, inquisitive, and compassionate second graders. They are learning about community, responsibility, and collaboration in a hands-on STEM classroom. I am inspired by their love for learning and their willingness to push through the tough stuff.
My students are doers, leaders, and our future.
My students thrive in a classroom that supports choice, creativity, and the freedom to think outside the box. My students are storytellers. We have a class blog and they post regularly. They critique books, share travel experiences, and talk about their daily life. They also, love to learn about the world around them, social justice, and human interactions. My students love to look at the map and dream of faraway places. They love to learn about how people around the world live and to create solutions to the everyday problems that children face. This year they engineered solutions to coastal erosion caused by tsunamis and debated the question, "Does where you live affect how you live?" My students love to talk through problems and share ideas. They are collaborative, cooperative, creative and kind. Each and every day they inspire me to become a better teacher.
My Project
My amazing second-grade students need a button machine and supplies to develop financial literacy through a hands-on and creative charity fundraiser. My students will write school slogans, design cute buttons, and have a sale to raise money for charity.
My empathic and globally aware students organized a charity yard sale and raised enough money to donate to the Malala fund and to buy farm animals for families in need through the Heifer organization.
However, they fell short on raising enough money to buy a cow. So, round two. The plan is to design and sell buttons and other items in a class store and hopefully raise the funds they need to continue their charitable work. Way to go second grade!
