My Students
Did you ever collect buttons as a kid? I still have "Shazbot" and my classic "Mr. Yuck" buttons. My students and I are really trying to make a difference. Our school does not have much money but we do have a lot of energy and creativity and now we have an idea. We want to make our own buttons!
I am very lucky to work with the best kids in the world.
They actually do come from many different backgrounds, cultures, and countries. My kids will be 5th graders next year, making them the kings of the school. Actually, they are a really sweet bunch and they are already planning some very exciting service learning projects and ways to bring the school community together. Our school does not have a PTA organization due to the fact that most of our families are working two jobs to keep their kids in clothes. With that in mind, my class wants to take an active roll in school fund raising. I see this role of leadership and responsibility as being very positive. My class is full of energy and creativity and if I can direct it into projects of hope and self advocacy I feel I am doing alright.
My Project
So we want a button maker. The kids have already thought of many good ways to use this tool. First off, they are hoping to make school pride buttons to give away to students and to sell at family and community gatherings. The proceeds would go to fund school trips and speakers. They are very excited about designing buttons for these purposes. We also have many school projects that could benefit from having button rewards. Some of these include "No TV Week", fund raisers for leukemia, and many Earth Day events. My class wants to create rewards and recognitions for these events.
I want to create positive community building experiences for my children.
Not everyone is going to find the same level of success through the standard curricula, no matter how hard they try. Language skills, family difficulties, and many other factors can affect how much a student can take in. One thing that really helps students is a strong investment in school. You can help create that for my students.
