Button Me Up! Promoting Financial Literacy and School Spirit
My students need materials required to make buttons to promote school spirit and learn about financial literacy including a metal button machine, metal buttons, two large circle punches, and printer toner!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Andy's classroom raised $894
This project is fully funded
My Students
As you walk through our building, you'll see students wearing buttons. Every child has a preference or supports a certain teacher's team. For the low price of $2/button, students can choose to support their favorite TALES teacher teams or collect them all. Regardless, they are proud of their school.
Master Andy's Yunglings, Belanich's Riches, Rita's Readers, Let it Go Levitt, Kelty's Celts, Brittany's Ballerinas, Woodburn Heat, Mighty Mills, Reilly's Runners are just a few of the teams we've created inspired by our school's wonderful teachers.
Some students choose to purchase buttons of their current teacher, others support teacher's who've impacted their lives, and handful has embarked on the journey to collect them all.
The idea of selling buttons stemmed from raising money for our school playground. Our healthy school focuses a lot of living an active lifestyle while making healthy choices. Recess is the only time our students can be children. Play is a very important part of child development and an upgraded playground is the outlet to let it happen. We've successfully met our goal through selling buttons and raising $6,000, but the craze has not seized. This will be a great opportunity for our 3rd grade students to take part in as they are introduced to financial literacy.
My Project
The button craze at our school has the opportunity to evolve into a teachable moment for our third grade students. Number stories are a big part of the third grade curriculum and important as it also develops reading comprehension for a student population which consists majority of English language learners.
Students are encouraged to make their own number stories and many are creating stories about Mr. Andy and his button making/selling activities.
The materials requested will allow our third graders to experience hands on learning as they take part in learning about the button making process and the transaction when buttons sell.
They will access the financial literacy aspect of making buttons by learning about the cost of producing buttons and the net profit. From there, they can be introduced to the concept of gross profit.
We're hoping to promote financial literacy by creating a school store operated mostly by students that will start by selling the teacher team buttons.
Learning through hypothetical situations is less meaningful compared to learning via hands on experience.
This project seeks to provide meaningful learning opportunities for our third grade students as they prepare for the standardized math test. The kids who operate the school store will report data back to their classes and those numbers will be utilized for their math workshop. This hands on learning experience will promote school spirit and introduce students to financial literacy.
