Butterfly Garden Reconstruction

Help me give my students the plants that they need to fix and maintain the butterfly garden at our school.

My Project

We have Girl Scouts (grade kindergarten through 5th) at our school who have been working on the Butterfly Garden for the past 4 years. Hurricane Ian in 2022 really hurt the garden in many ways. It took time away from our project because we were working on our homes and becoming ourselves again. Then the facilities department of the school board cut down the large oak trees that were in the garden. The trees provided shade and natural mulch in the way of dead leaves.

We want to update and fix our garden so it looks more inviting to both the students and butterflies.

The Border Grass will be used to help finish the butterfly that was to be made out of plants. One side did well after Ian. The other side did not do so well. We will use the milk weed to help the butterflies lay their eggs and the leaves will provide food for the caterpillars. The other plants are for their beauty as much as they are for food for the butterflies.

The Girl Scouts use this project as an opportunity to give back to their school as well as give back to the world. These are main parts of Girl Scouts. I as the troop leader and teacher always make sure the girls give back since they get so much as a fully funded troop. The girls will also be making new stepping stones for the garden since those that are there are in poor condition. We have the materials for those.
