This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a small, community-based Title I school in East Oakland. Students are primarily from low-income, immigrant families, and are highly motivated to achieve. Their families are from Guatemala, Yemen, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Cambodia, the Philippines, Tonga and the U.S.

COVID-19 has them learning from home in a zip code with the highest rate of infection in the county, and with new stress and responsibilities as they help hold together households with family members who have lost employment or been directly affected by COVID-19.

Our students are hungry to learn and deserving of everything that we can creatively muster to provide for them. We are working hard to create projects that foster their love of learning and empower them to use their creativity to expand their world.

My Project

I teach science to students from Guatemala and El Salvador who are primarily Mam speakers. Most of them are in their first year or second year in the US -- what a year to arrive! Distance learning is a particularly difficult challenge for students who are still learning to read and write for the first time in their second or even third language, and who have limited access to computers and high-speed Internet. Usually, the hands-on wonder of science is something that can transcend barriers of language and experience, but this year, that's off-limits, and virtual field trips are not enough. I want to give my students the experience of doing science, even if it requires some out-of-the-box thinking.

To meet the challenges of learning from home and get students curious about science, I have been delivering "science kits" to my students, and these deliveries have become one of the things my students and I look forward to the most.

For my next science kit, I am requesting individual butterfly growing kits for each of my students, with a caterpillar, caterpillar food, mesh habitat, chrysalis-holding log, and butterfly feeder. We have been focused on nature journaling and doing citizen science, including revising scientific drawings the students did from dead, mounted butterflies, to focus on our skills of accurate observation, asking questions, giving descriptive feedback, and making revisions based on feedback. I am requesting butterfly growing kits to make butterflies literally "come alive" for my students, and to to help my students continue to observe carefully, ask questions, collect evidence and data, conduct investigations, and draw evidence-based conclusions from their home. Later in the year, I hope students can apply their learning to creating butterfly gardens for monarch butterflies, which come to Oakland each Fall and Winter.
