Butterflies Build Hope

Help me give my students hands-on science as the observe and care for caterpillars as they grow and turn into butterflies!

My Students

We are a very rural school located in Southern Oregon. Our school is a K-5 elementary school with a large playground and surrounding property that allows for many outdoor activities. It is not unusual to see turkey and deer on the playground, along with goats, lizards, and sometimes the neighbor's horse.

At our school, we are faced with a high poverty population.

Our students are dependent upon finding a safe and secure environment here in which they are able to learn. This is often the main place in which they feel at home. We make it a priority to ensure that our students are provided with the essentials they need to be successful.

Meeting their mental, physical, emotional, social and academic needs is a constant concern and focus for our staff. We have limited resources with which to accomplish these important goals.

My Project

With distance learning a current reality, bringing hands-on learning to my students is more important and more challenging than ever.

By providing each student a butterfly habitat to use at home, students will continue to learn, explore and engage in the scientific process while learning in isolation.

Common Core standards include understanding life cycles and the needs animals to ensure survival. This project invites students to experience the life cycle of a monarch butterfly. Students will become little scientists as they observe the daily growth and development and learn how we can ensure we are giving these creatures their needs for survival.

Help me provide a learning experience at their fingertips!

This project bridges the gap between home and school while addressing the current challenges our families are facing in engaging in hands-on science while isolated at home. Students will discover the true beauty of nature and gain responsibility as they care for these creatures in our classroom.
