This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Spring is my favorite time as a third grade teacher. It's the point in the year where our ELA, Science, and Social Studies curriculums align in an amazing way. "We're learning about butterflies" does not begin to cover what is happening in our classrooms during the Spring.

Every year, our third graders witness the life cycle of butterflies while learning about their impact on the environment and the impact of the environment on the butterflies.

Without fail, they ask why they can't keep the butterflies they raise as pets. We feel that it is very important to teach our students about the impact butterflies have on our environment and the impact the environment has on butterflies.

We read about the life cycle of insects and the impact of farm fresh food. We learn about the environment and it's relationship with organisms, and we observe the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly. The Butterfly habitats will help us better observe the butterflies once they emerge from the chrysalis. Currently, we must use a copy paper box and netting for this stage. It is incredibly hard for the students to observe with this set up. The larger habitat is designed for viewing. It is also large enough to include a plant inside, making the experience more authentic. For a few extra days, students will be able to observe the butterflies in as close to an authentic environment that we can make rather than to see them drink from cotton balls soaked in sugar water.
