Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first graders are a bunch of eager learners. They have the wonderful opportunity of receiving an unique education through design thinking and project-based learning. The curiosity, imagination, and diversity of my students naturally supports the design thinking process. While design thinking about how their classroom should look, many of them had tremendous ideas about forts, climbing walls, and swings. It truly showed that they are willing to dream and achieve anything. My students also practice collaboration skills by working in teams daily. It has been evident that they have already adopted many communication and problem-solving skills in their year of kindergarten. While brainstorming norms for their classroom charter, one student raised his hand to suggest adding working as a team to the charter.

My goal is to provide my students with the resources, materials, and support they need to achieve their dreams whether it be building a classroom climbing wall, knowing all 220 sight words.

I cannot wait to see what these artists, athletes, scholars, and collaborators achieve this year.

My Project

The moment my classroom door opened on Back to School Night, I had many students rush the library shelves, sit down at the nearest table, and sat quietly as I met their parents. As school has started, students have began practicing reading to themselves but I keep getting the same complaint, "I can't read yet!" It is quite evident that my first graders are eager to become emergent and fluent readers.

I want to foster a love for reading in our classroom which means providing my students with a variety of genres and levels of text.

I am asking for a variety of fiction and non-fiction books including Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History and Splat the Cat: Big Reading Collection. Also, because I have a bunch of animal lovers in my classroom this year and I know they would love to put a bunch of the National Geographic: Kids readers about animals in their book bags.

My students have already built great relationships with many literary characters like Biscuit and Splat the Cat. During read to self or read to partner, my students would be able to pick up these readers and continue that love all while reading words they know and understand. I cannot wait to see their faces light up when they find new and familiar faces and topics in their classroom library.
