Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last year, I taught three sections of sixth grade literacy in a very under resourced school in Brooklyn, NY. Throughout the year, I struggled to find enough copies of quality independent reading books to support my 70 readers and writers. I was constantly desperate to find books that would interest my students and were appropriate for their various reading levels. This is difficult, but it is particularly difficult during the middle school years. The students refuse to read "baby" books, yet certain students need to choose books on a lower level. This year, I will be "looping," teacher-speak for moving up with a group of students to the next grade. These students are some of the most intelligent, driven kids I have ever encountered. They love to read, but they know what they like. I fear that my meager selection of books will not satisfy their appetite for reading. I can hear it now, "But Miss, I read that last year!" I have a small library of about 500 books for my students to choose from. While I have plenty of books appropriate for sixth graders, my seventh grade class will have little to choose from. I am desperate to update my library with new, interesting, seventh grade appropriate reading material. I want nothing more than to supply my students with the books they want to read. The books that I am requesting will be invaluable tools that will truly benefit my students. Please help me to help my students to become better readers.
