Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My middle school students think poetry is impossible to understand. Yet, they are expected to analyze poems as one of their standards. The poetry we have access to is either extremely out of date, or meaningless to them. We need many more poems to develop their knowledge and skill.

We are a middle school with kids from impoverished backgrounds.

The kids are funny, enthusiastic, and very appreciative. They respond to experiential learning wholeheartedly, but California's education budget cuts have severely affected our ability to provide those experiences. Teaching poetry is required, but helping the students understand it impossible without materials.

My Project

We will use these poetry materials for reading aloud, memorization, student and performing. The students will be able to use the poems as mentor texts for the creation of their own poems. The students will use analyze the poems for meter, figurative language, rhyme patterns, and word choice. They will use higher level thinking skills to find the meaning. Hopefully, they will grow to view poetry as a way to express deep feeling. We will need lots and lots of practice

How can our kids be expected to know something, when the materials to learn it as practically nonexistent?

How can we get these kids so immersed in poetry that they will see the value of it in their stressful lives? The answer is giving them the opportunity to experience poetry first hand. I know, with the abundance of poetry, they can and will.
