Busy Minds Busy Learners

My students need a different approach to learning. We use lots of sensory based activities and materials for calming, muscle memory, tactile input. For example the stepping stones are used for motor planning, and balance.

My Students

Imagine going to school for a full day and being unable to tolerate the noise and smells, having difficulty understanding teacher's instructions, making friends with your peers, completing an assignment or crafts, unable to sit during circle time or stand in line. My students range in ages and abilities but their goal is the same: to be successful and function inside the classroom. Whether it is sensory, Autism, developmental delays, or physical impairments, our students require assistance in order to do the things we take for granted on a daily basis.

My Project

My students have unimaginable challenges they face on a daily basis. These materials provide sensory experiences to help with calming in order to attend and focus, gross motor equipment to help with motor planning and balance needed for playing on the playground, blocks for fine and visual motor development needed for classroom assignments and crafts. When there is sensory dysfunction within their systems, the students have difficulty processing and responding to input appropriately and effectively. They require different kinds of input in order to function whether it is the seeker who gets in trouble because he or she can not keep their hands to themselves, the avoider who refuses to touch craft materials because the textures, or the under responsive student who falls and trips while walking in the halls. All these students require different forms of input to their sensory system in order to properly and effectively process the constant sensory input from their environment.
