Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to Ms. Lloyd's Laboratory! My students come from all over Los Angeles, most are from low-income areas, and ALL of them are creative, active learners who are naturally curious about the world around them. My job is to give them the tools they need not just to be successful science students, but to be critical consumers of information.
Our school believes that when we nurture curiosity, we can expect creativity!
What I love about my students is the energy they bring to the classroom each day. In our classroom, it's not uncommon to see students applauding each other, and cheering each other on as we work through assignments and activities in class. Teaching 7th graders is no easy task, but my students make me laugh every single day.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with attention and focus during science class, which can make it difficult to provide a comfortable learning environment. Some students already self-regulate by tapping pencils, fidgeting with erasers, and kicking their chairs and desks. With over 30 students in each class, this can get pretty noisy! My goal is to provide them an alternative that will keep their hands busy without distracting the class.
Help me provide students with fidgets and sensory toys to help them self-regulate so they can focus during class.
The science behind fidgets is that playing with them increases the number of neurotransmitters in the brain that control focus. Although most of my students are not diagnosed with attention disorders, all of my students still have sensory needs. As a teacher, I emphasize self-advocacy with my students. Teaching them to recognize what they need and ask for it appropriately is a skill that will help them well beyond middle school. These toys will act as classroom incentives for them to advocate for themselves!
