My Students

Albert Einstein once said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun." As an art teacher, I am in the business of helping young artists develop both creativity and intelligence!

My student artists, many first and second-generation Americans, are growing up in a large urban school district, whose budget cuts resulted in the suspension of our school's art program for many years.

Our tremendous school community dreamed of bringing our students an art program, and have been thrilled to watch our students' creativity blossom. Now entering its 8th year, our art program has moved into a new classroom, transitioned to a choice-based-studio, and continues to see fantastic results. From September to June the walls of our school are covered with beautiful pieces that make students proud. Each year culminates with a school-wide art gallery and sees students represented in district-wide art shows!

My Project

STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!

At the heart of both STEAM and Choice-Based Art is "inquiry, curiosity, being able to find solutions to a problem, and being creative in the finding of the solutions."

Many of us remember playing with blocks or LEGOs growing up. But what we may not realize, is that many early childhood programs have been teaching the foundations skills of STEAM for decades by simply letting young learners engage with blocks and building. A choice-based artroom takes the foundation of exploration and builds on it in ways that allow students to truly see, document, and reflect on their design process.

Each week I observe artists in our construction and sculpture centers envisioning, exploring, experimenting and then problem-solving when something does not go as intended. Over the course of a few hours, a first-grader explores how to balance a block tower, a third-grader carefully cuts and measures cardboard to create a custom speed boat, and a pair of middle school students try multiple solutions to create a sculpture with the ability to transform.

While older students have the fine motor skills to access more advanced materials and tools such as hot glue and Exacto knives, our youngest learners require materials that allow them to build essential critical thinking skills in a safe environment. These materials will help build a diverse and safe "library" of materials for young builders to choose from.
