Busy Breakfast for 2nd Graders

My Students

All of my students love learning but their ability levels vary greatly. I have a class of 20. Their diverse backgrounds include some with regular exposure to books and others with little to no "out of the classroom" experience. The majority of my students have a challenging and difficult home life. The school is a Title I school that has over 90% of the population is low income. We also have a large foster care population.

The school is a public school in an urban community.

Recently, the school district suffered a deficit and all of its schools suffered a financial loss including loss of vital staff members and lack of school supplies. Most of the students only come to school supplied with pencils, crayons, and a few composition books that will need to be replenished by mid-year.

My Project

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Most of my students miss the opportunity to eat breakfast in the morning because they have to get to school a half-hour before school starts to receive breakfast. Most of my students walk to school with an older sibling or get dropped off by a parent, so they miss this opportunity.

I would like to provide these students an opportunity to eat a small, healthy breakfast in the classroom during morning work.

For the first ten minutes of school, these students will get to eat breakfast while they work. This will help keep them engaged and focused during class until lunchtime.
