This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are the busiest little Honey bees in the building! From the minute these cuties come in at our classroom door, they truly make the most of their day with high energy and incredible inquisitiveness. For the majority of my students, this is their very first school experience! After lunch and recess they take a much needed nap then wake up and finish the rest of the day well rested and ready to learn.
Most of our children come from low-income households but are able to bring a blanket or towel from home for a cover and we are able to provide the sheets for them so parents do not have to purchase them.
My Project
Our children desperately need rest mats. Our current mats have major tears after years of use. Many are duct taped together! Unfortunately, we do not have enough resources to purchase the mats because in doing so, it will take away so much from the budget meant for educational materials for small groups and math block. Many of our students catch the bus as early as 6:30 in the morning and and often come to school very tired and hungry. After lunch they are ready for rest time and nearly all of them go to sleep.
Naps play are vital in a young child's development.
Often, naps are necessary to help a young child reach their daily sleep requirement. Proper sleep helps improve cognitive skills, socio-emotional skills, and self-regulation.
