Busy Beans Need a New Toaster!

Help me give my students new Toaster Oven for our school Cookie Business!

My Project

My special needs students have a small class business called "The Busy Beans". We sell cookies, soft drinks, snacks and coffee to the staff at the school. Unfortunanantly, our toaster oven is on it's last leg and will not be able to be used before too long. Also, we currently have to send a student out of the class to get ice from the cafateria to fill our "soda" orders and having an ice machiene in the classroom would make it so much easier on the students to not have to leave to grab ice for every order.

Our student-run coffee cart business helps our students with special needs to develop life skills, social skills, and vocational skills in a real-world setting.

Our cart encourages interaction with peers, teachers, and staff, building confidence in conversations. It teaches polite greetings, customer service, and how to take orders effectively. It provides opportunities to practice eye contact, listening, and turn-taking in conversations. It also helps develops responsibility through managing tasks like preparing drinks, handling money, and cleaning up. Students get to practice how to count money, make change, and use a cash register or payment system. Most importantly, it empowers students by giving them a sense of ownership and responsibility over a real project.

The goals for this project are to increase student confidience in initiating and maintaining conversations with peers and staff. Improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills, such as making eye contact and using polite greetings.

Teach students how to follow multi-step directions to complete tasks (e.g., making coffee, delivering orders). Strengthen money-handling skills, including counting cash, making change, and using a register or payment app and to encourage students to take initiative and complete tasks with minimal prompting.
