Bust Through the Bias! Annotating The Outsiders

Help me give my students a copy of The Outsiders, a classic piece of literature that explores injustice, bias, and family. Analyzing this book will not only create a great resource, but a memory that will last.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Having a copy of this timeless story of struggle will help my students in many ways. Although many of my students come from hardworking parents, those same parents struggle in this post-COVID economy, making owning age-appropriate novels difficult. Having their own copy will lend itself to a more literature rich environment.

The book, The Outsiders, will be the platform from which to teach students how to effectively annotate a text, seeking main idea, themes, foreshadowing clues, patterns, symbolism, and identifying figurative language - all to bring this story, their story in many cases, to life!

This simple paperback becomes an incredible model and resource for identifying the same elements in novels read in high school, college, and life.

This novel's themes will resonate within students, leaving them feeling less isolated in their own struggles, inspiring students to stay good in spite of their own circumstances when life gets tough, and encouraging them to look for the beauty of (and promise found) in watching sunsets.

Many of my students experience economic disparity and social injustice, and thus can identify with the characters in the novel.

Before they can find the answers to problems that the main character faces, and apply the lessons to their own lives, they need to get into the story.

I love the fact that although teens want to be too cool for school, their eyes light up and their voices go up a notch or two when they find out that the books are theirs to keep!
